Ho’omakaukau

Ho`omakaukau Ho’omākaukau is a before-school physical activity program for elementary students. It prepares children for a day of learning, and helps them gain an appreciation for the benefits of exercise and healthy choices that will last a lifetime. The program loosely follows the BOKS curriculum, which was inspired by a book called Spark, by Dr. John Ratey. Dr. Ratey, of Harvard Medical School, has said that “exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains.” The program focuses on fun, and classes are filled with team-oriented games and play. (Visit www.bokskids.org for more curriculum details.)

How do I sign my student up?

You don’t have to! It’s open to up to 40 elementary students during program days and is based on a first-come first-served basis. Students that arrive later than 7:25am may still be able to join the day’s class depending on staffing and the activity for that day. If you do not want your student to participate in this program, please contact Patty Boland at [email protected] or 962-2200 to opt out.

This sounds like fun! Can I help with the program?

Yes you can! The program is designed to involve the whole community and family.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Patty Boland, as above.
