2. Hawaii State Public Library System Resumes Computer Time on October 5th

Public Access Computers Now Available Statewide

HONOLULU – The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) is excited to resume Computer Time at public library branches statewide, as Library Take Out service continues to be available by appointment or on a first-come, first-serve, walk-up basis.

With the emergence of the COVID-19 global pandemic in Hawaii, HSPLS staff have worked hard to transform library services to meet changing community needs. During the stay-at-home orders, the library system unveiled a variety of new digital and virtual learning tools and services available free-of-charge to anyone in our community.

As Hawaii’s infection rate slowly begins to fall, the public library system is now able to safely restore access to our public computers and free wifi zones at our libraries statewide.

New protocols are being implemented to keep our computer users and library staff safe during this pandemic:

·       Library patrons may use a computer on a first-come, first-serve, walk-up basis

·       Library patrons may also call ahead to reserve access to a computer

·       Each user will be limited to (1) 45-minute computer session per day

·       Computer sessions will start at the top of the hour

·       Free wifi zones are available to library patrons outside library buildings

All library patrons using public computers will be required to follow mandated health and safety protocols, including wearing a face covering that covers the nose and mouth area at all times.  Computer access is limited at this time to limit exposure and to allow for time for proper disinfection of all computer equipment between uses.

All public libraries will continue to offer Library Take Out services including:

·       Scheduling appointments for picking up hold items that are ready

·       Assistance with library cards, including creating new library card accounts

·       Payment of fines and fees

·       Information request and assistance by telephone or via walk-up service

The Kahului, Liliha, and McCully-Moiliili Public Libraries remain closed for renovation and repair work. The Hawaii State Library continues to offer Library Take Out only as staff continue to support unemployment processes to support our community.

Although our buildings remain closed for other services, an amazing array of free online resources are always available from home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at librarieshawaii.org.  Enjoy our free resources by using your HSPLS library card!

Hawaii State Public Library System Launches Scholastic Teachables
Free Online Resources for Teachers, Parents and Students

HONOLULU —The Hawaii State Public Library System is launching Scholastic Teachables, a free online educational resource to support Hawaii’s keiki from home.  Anyone with a Hawaii State Public Library System card can access thousands of learning opportunities for students.

Scholastic Teachables is a free online database of tens of thousands of searchable and printable educational materials. Created by teachers and precisely leveled, Scholastic Teachables materials are of high-quality and are ready-to-use for all age ranges from Pre-K to grade 8.

Teachers and parents can search over 25,000 skills and activity sheets, mini-books, educational crafts, and more, to meet student needs. Access to Scholastic Teachables is like having thousands of workbooks, crafts and activities at your fingertips.

“We know that education in the current environment is a challenge.  As a statewide library system, we want to support all of our learners so that everyone has an opportunity to continue their educational journey.  With a library card, students, families and educators will have free access to Scholastic Teachables, which promotes skill building while making learning fun at the same time.  We hope this will provide the additional resources that our growing learners need right now,” said State Librarian Stacey A. Aldrich.

During the pandemic, the Hawaii State Public Library System staff has continued to work hard to support our residents with new and improved virtual resources accessible from home.  In addition to Scholastic Teachables, the Hawaii State Public Library System has been busy presenting these programs during the pandemic:

- An extended 2020 Summer Reading program “Imagine Your Story” through August 31;
- Access to Ancestry Library Edition from home;
- Continued acquisition of books and materials, including increasing the number of ebook selections;
- Launched our own virtual programs featuring library staff story times and craft projects;
- Provided access to Kanopy, a new video streaming service which provides free access to high-quality films, children’s programming and educational courses; and
- Created a new online library card application process.

In addition, the Hawaii Public Library System offers access to numerous databases; Bookflix ebooks for kids; standardized test taking programs; foreign language lessons through Mango Languages; and access to hundreds of newspapers and magazines from around the world, including The New York Times. For students with visual disabilities, dyslexia or other physical impairments that prevent them from reading standard printed material, our Library for the Blind and Print Disabled offers books in large print, audio and braille formats.

Library cards are free for Hawaii residents.  Don’t have a Hawaii State Public Library System library card? No problem! The Library System created a new online library card application process to allow our community to stay-at-home and still use our resources. The new library card application is now available online and provides access to library resources for 45 days. Before the 45 days expires, individuals must visit their nearest library to receive their permanent library card.

Please don't hesitate to call us at 962-2229.

Please don't forget about all of our fantastic free webinars, online courses, movies, ebooks, and more through our library website.

Below I have attached information on how you can do all of the above and more!

1. Using Computers:

Beginning Wednesday, June 17th, the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) will offer access to public computers by reservation at all library branches.  Computer access is not available at the Hawaii State Library, Liliha, McCully-Moiilili locations at this time.

Re-opening access to our public computers is part of HSPLS’ phased reopening of library services as Hawaii carefully begins to get back to business amid the ongoing threat of COVID-19.  Our library buildings will only be open for library patrons with computer reservations as we begin to implement new protocols for ensuring that our spaces are safe and healthy for everyone.

In an effort to meet the computer needs of as many library patrons as possible, meet social distancing guidelines and ensure proper cleaning protocols are performed, HSPLS will be using a public computer reservation system:

·         Library patrons may reserve one 60-minute computer session per day using the library’s computer reservation system on the HSPLS website (librarieshawaii.org) or by calling the library branch they would like to visit

·         Unreserved appointment times will be offered for walk-ups on a first come, first served basis

·         Library patrons are limited to a total of no more than two sessions per day

All library patrons entering the building will be required to follow basic health protocols including wearing a face covering, which covers their nose and mouth while visiting the library.  The equipment and high touch areas will be cleaned after each computer session is completed.

No book donations will be accepted at this time.

2. Materials Checkout:

Beginning Monday, June 8, 2020, the Library Take Out Menu is expanding to include assistance with library card accounts, payment of fines and fees, and walk up information assistance.

With the expansion of library services, our newest online card holders can now visit their library to activate permanent library cards for access to the full range of services.
While our buildings remain closed to the public, we appreciate the public’s patience as we continue to safely phase in our library services for the community.

3. Summer Reading Program:

Get your creative juices flowing and Imagine Your Story this summer! The Hawaii State Public Library System is pleased to announce the launch of our 2020 Virtual Summer Reading Program, running from June 15 to August 31, 2020.

Our expanded online Summer Reading Program allows all readers, from keiki to kupuna, the flexibility to explore creativity and imagination using an easy mobile phone app.  Enjoy engaging virtual activities, programs and crafts, and take the challenge to read and log 1,000 minutes. For every 100 minutes of reading logged, library patrons are rewarded with a virtual badge, a downloadable activity, and an automatic entry in the lucky prize drawing. The more you read, the better your chances to win our lucky grand prize drawing: four roundtrip tickets to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, courtesy of Alaska Airlines!

“Ignite your imagination through fairy tales, fantasy, crafts, artwork, sewing, writing, poetry, music, photography and more! This summer is the perfect time to download ebooks, audiobooks and emagazines.  If you don’t already have a library card, no problem! Everyone can now apply for a library card online and participate in our Summer Reading Program. Read and log your minutes online, and help us reach our statewide reading goal of 10 million minutes,” urged State Librarian Stacey Aldrich.

To register, visit librarieshawaii.org/SummerReading. Hawaii’s Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and our 2020 Summer Reading Sponsors.
