About LCPCS Governing Board & Policy Governance
Understanding Policy Governance at LCPCS
Laupāhoehoe Community Public Charter School uses Policy Governance to provide clear leadership, accountability, and a strong focus on student success.
This model helps define the separate roles of the Governing Board and the School Director, so the school can operate effectively while staying aligned with its mission and community values.
The Big Picture
The Governing Board sets the direction.
The School Director leads the work.
These roles are different, but they work together to support student success.
The Governing Board’s Role
The Governing Board represents the voices of students, families, and the community.
The Board is responsible for:
- Setting the school’s vision and long-term goals
- Defining student success outcomes, also called Ends
- Establishing policies that guide the school
- Monitoring progress and results
- Listening to community input and representing the owners of the school
The Governing Board focuses on the big picture, not the daily management of the school.
The School Director’s Role
The School Director is responsible for the school’s daily leadership and operations.
The School Director is responsible for:
- Managing the day-to-day operation of the school
- Supporting students, teachers, and staff
- Carrying out the Board’s goals and policies
- Reporting progress and results to the Governing Board
- Ensuring the school operates safely, effectively, and in compliance
The School Director leads the work needed to meet the goals set by the Board.
How They Work Together
The Governing Board and School Director work together with clear responsibilities.
- The Board has one employee: the School Director
- The Board sets expectations and monitors results
- The School Director is accountable for achieving those results
This structure keeps leadership clear and helps the school stay focused on student achievement.
The Policy Governance Cycle
Policy Governance is an ongoing process:
Set Direction → Implement Plans → Monitor Progress → Review Results → Improve
This cycle helps ensure continuous learning, accountability, and improvement.
Why It Matters
Policy Governance helps LCPCS:
- Keep students at the center of decisions
- Maintain clear leadership roles
- Strengthen accountability
- Honor community voice
- Support long-term success for the school
