SEL Curriculum

LCPCS places a strong emphasis on social and emotional learning (SEL), and uses nationally recognized SEL curricula in all grade levels. 

 

PreK students through eighth graders use the Second Step curriculum (see www.cfchildren.org/second-step for more info). The PreK unit focuses primarily on the transition to kindergarten, with a focus on self-regulation and executive-function skills. The kindergarten-fifth grade unit teaches social-emotional skills — such as making friends, managing emotions, and solving problems — that set students on a path for social success and academic readiness. Sixth through eighth graders learn communication, coping, and decision-making skills to help them navigate adolescence, make good choices, and avoid pitfalls, such as peer pressure, substance abuse, and bullying.


 

High school students use the School-Connect curriculum (for more information on School-Connect, visit www.school-connect.net).This program targets social and emotional competencies (i.e. social awareness, self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making) that have been identified as critical to success in school, the workplace, and life. Students engage in lessons on empathy, bully prevention, coping mechanisms, brainstorming and evaluating solutions, negotiating an agreement, apologizing and forgiving, and more. Modules include “Building Academic Strengths and Purpose,” “Developing Self-Awareness and Self-Management,” “Resolving Conflicts and Making Decisions,” and others.
